What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
Well, the date of the event is obviously all-important, as is the number of guests (for a buffet or afternoon tea). Please, when asking about a cake don't just tell us it's a 3-tier cake you want - is it 4" or 12"? Feeding 6 or 600? These things make a huge difference! I know not everyone knows what they want, but we do need a starting point. How many it needs to feed and maybe a basic design concept is also key too!
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Don't always go for the cheapest - if 6 companies quote £5+ a head and one quotes £2 a head, you have to wonder what quality of food they're going to be providing! Personally, I think smaller companies are nicer as they tend to go the extra mile to accommodate wishes with (for example) menu swaps. You also tend to get a more personalised service. I care about my event, and I want a caterer who will do the same!
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
The Rolling Scones started because of two friends who got married. We couldn't think what to buy them for a present, so we offered to cater an afternoon tea for their reception. It was a village hall, very rustic and so fitted really well with the whole feel of the event. We had such a blast doing it, that we said we ought to do it professionally. Ollie came up with the name and it just rolled from there!
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
We did a 40th birthday party in March last year, which was just after the snow had hit. Undeterred by the weather, the buffet still happened and it looked amazing! The client was so pleased with it all. Lots of the guests were complimenting the food, which was really what we're after - it was our first event through Add to Event, and we were so chuffed with ourselves for getting it done so well!
