What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

To provide a comprehensive quote for circus entertainment we would need as much of the following information as possible: An event date, a description of the event (Gala, Garden Party, Wedding, Black Tie Event etc) and an approximation of where it will take place, including if possible the name of the venue itself. The more information you provide us with initially, the better we are able to send an accurate quote. More often than not we would follow this up with a phone call as circus entertainment is subject to a number of external factors which need to be considered case by case.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The main priorities would be to ask about public liability insurance, risk assessments and experience - especially for fire performers, and not to take the cheapest quote just for the reason that it is the cheapest! Our overheads are quite high and our job is extremely dangerous to our health, this is why we carry a fairly substantial booking price. Sometimes accepting a cheaper quote without checking the necessary safety expertise is in place may mean that some of this professionalism is compromised as there is no specific legal requirements or training for fire arts. With something as dangerous as fire performance it is imperative to be safe, and an expert, experienced performer will be able to professionally guide you throughout the whole process.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

Captain Jackdaw and the Rumbucket came together at the wrong end of a bottle of Rum one evening in a candlelit room in South Wales. Our first gig in this guise was for charity, and to a room full of similarly inebriated but rather generous adults. Their next gig was also a roaring success, an arts project in Cardiff requiring a Japanese-style performance. We noticed a pattern emerging and so decided to go full time, combining their collective creative skills learnt over the previous two decades. Their passion lies in performance, and their skills are honed in streets across Europe as street entertainers, taking people out of their worries for a few hours at a time and creating memories to last a lifetime.

Our Troupe is steadily growing and now includes some delightful acrobats to add to our forthcoming European Tour.

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

We would really struggle to recommend just one booking - all of our clients have been extremely hospitable and we've been 100% positively received - so to pick just one? A particularly memorable performance would have to be in the unusual environment of Aynhoe Park - we took ourselves and our acrobats to the home of ex-90's Dj and party provider James Perkins to deliver an evening of fun, fire and freakery to the guests of Gill, at Rare Events. The huge house is filled with curiosities, including a taxidermy unicorn (?!) and giraffe hanging from a balloon on the ceiling. Our acrobats were, as ever, hilariously entertaining and we have a beautiful photograph of us double fire eating in the ballroom which was just spectacular.
