What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

To provide a comprehensive quote, we need to know the total number of guests and if possible the ratio of children to adults or drinkers to non-drinkers. Knowing the timings of bar service is useful; and if possible timings of other aspects of the day - for example there may be an hour where nobody will be asking for drinks from the bar, at which point our staff can assist in other areas of service. We also need to know if we will be the sole provider of drinks at the function.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure they have a track record of a good few years - if they don't have enough experience, they won't cope with the unforeseen situations that arise at events. Check they have appropriate documentation, insurance and profiles of the staff they are sending to your event. Establish whether they will undertake a site visit to familiarise themselves with the venue, storage facilities, access, parking and the staff on site.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

I started serving guests at the family home when I was just 14 years old and enjoyed being part of a fun environment. The more effort you make, the more a guest gets out of the event and you get thanked accordingly. There's no better start to a working week than a wedding couple telling you how much difference you, your team, their service and their drinks made to the biggest day of their lives so far. And any true professional is always learning so they can improve year on year; after 18 years and tens of thousands of happy guests served I, and we as Cocktailmaker, are still evolving.

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

Our last booking was from Eddie in Wycombe, who was putting on a surprise 30th birthday party for his brother, so we added to the surprise factor by designing the menu and descriptions of the cocktails around Jamie (Eddie's brother) - he loved all the references we'd made to his life. Eddie is a lovely guy with a very interesting job; it takes all sorts of interesting people to make up this world - and we get to meet a lot of them in our line of work. We offer the personal touch which makes such a difference to any event. Add to Event do their job very well, capturing leads and inquiries for us to convert to bookings.
