What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

For us to provide a basic quote we would need to know at least the event type (e.g. wedding / 21st birthday etc.), the proposed date, and start and end time (or duration), the approx. location e.g. town and the approx. the number of guests and size of space available for setting up. For a more comprehensive quote, we would also need to know the proposed venue, (capacity) and any difficulties of access (e.g. upstairs. Also, does equipment need setting up in advance, and for longer events (e.g. some weddings), if you require earlier background music, additional PA systems for speeches. Our DJ can act as MC to guide your guests with announcements during the day. For us every event, big or small, is bespoke. Just ask!

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Ask the provider to say how long they have been doing weddings (or your event type). Will they dress appropriately for the occasion? What range of genres of music do they present, and how many tracks are carried? Do they use state-of-the-art sound systems that are live mixed or do they rely on pre-recorded setlists? Does the DJ interact with the crowd and accept special requests? Will the provider liaise with the customer to obtain any special requests for first dances etc? Can they provide a light show for the size of your venue? What extras can they offer to enhance your event e.g. confetti and glitter cannons or additional uplighters to improve a drab venue or stage spots for band or solo artiste.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

Softspot Disco was born in the 1970s when the original DJs were running youth clubs in Cambridgeshire, East Anglia, and provided entertainment for schools and teenagers. It quickly grew to providing family events as these young people developed into wanting 18 / 21st birthdays and eventually weddings and anniversaries. As our experience and expertise grew we branched out into Cambridge University May Balls and residencies in nightclubs and hotels such as The Royal Cambridge Hotel, adding additional band lighting and special effects including laser shows. Many of the young people who grew up with us became DJs themselves in our disco or branched out on their own. DJ and entertainment is in our blood. It's what we do|
Some of our family love Cornwall, and have recently relocated to Liskeard, Cornwall and are now offering our services to Devon and Cornwall in the West Country, where we intend to bring our experience and technical expertise to the good people of this area. We intend to become the top supplier of DJs, for weddings, family occasions, hotels and school and corporate events, including additional stage lighting and effects for live presentations.

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

Having recently relocated to Cornwall we are already receiving a steady stream of requests through Add to Event and we have already started by doing one event at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay, and have a residency booked for their Xmas discos for 2021. We have also just presented our first wedding event through Add to Event, in a private marquee with guests flying in by helicopter. Having previously worked alongside every kind of event supplier from catering to stages we look forward to building a relationship with suppliers in Cornwall and Devon to work with Add to Event to provide the most professional service in the West Country. We intend to bring the London entertainment scene and Cambridge May Ball experience to enhance (not replace) traditional Cornish local entertainment. For us, no event is too big or too small, but each event is bespoke to you within your budget.
