What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
To reply with a quote I need to know the date and location of the event and if it is indoors or outdoors. An estimate of start and end times is good too as I generally charge by the hour. Knowing any themes for the event, what sort of event it is and the expected age range and number helps as well.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
There are lots of face painters nowadays, and generally you get what you pay for. Many cheaper painters (and even some that are more expensive) will be slow and less skilled or using basic or even non-cosmetic products. That means not as many people will be painted, and customers do notice the speed and skills of the art. If you want to make a good impression you need to book experienced artists who as well as top quality cosmetic products, will have proper Public Liability Insurance specifically for face & body art, will know their health and safety issues and will also have the knowledge to do more designs, faster, to a much higher level of art. I am an Advanced Level 2 FACE association member which means my speed, skills, hygiene etc are annually checked by them as well as keeping to my own high standards.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
I was an Education Officer in a UK Zoo and started face painting as part of my job, as I had an art degree too and could talk about the animals I was painting. I went on to win UK Professional Face Painter of the Year, and came 5th in the World Awards. I started a weekend business as I loved seeing the transformations and smiles face paint can cause. 10 years ago I became a face & body artist full time and now do this all over the world, as well as judging national beauty and face/ body events, and teaching body art in colleges. I've won most of the UK glitter tattoo and body painting awards, and made it to the finals of the World Bodypainting Championships. I'm the lead artist and tutor for Paintopia, the UK's largest and highest quality face & body art festival, and am on the Committee of the International FACE association.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
I've had several bookings through here since I joined late last year. I do like being able to choose who I reply to and not having to pay a monthly fee - it's much more cost and time efficient for me as I can often tell just by the query if someone is looking for a beginner (free or cheap) painter or a proper professional. I've had 2 student ball bookings that I loved, and the students seemed to love my art with even the boys being painted. Ladies usually go for something to match their dresses and the guys always seem to want to be tigers or batmen! At both I painted flat out and also took as many finished face photos as possible to send to the client as a thanks.
