What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
I think the most important information is the date, the time of the booking from start to finish and the location. The type of act you're looking for and the nature of the engagement are also important. That's definitely enough to be going with in order to get a rough idea of the cost.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
I'd make sure you can see them doing what they do in some way, i.e. watch videos online or listen to their demos. If you are communicating with them, ask them to send you examples of what they do, in my case that would be live excerpts of songs I have sung at other people's weddings or parties. It's great if the supplier has testimonials that you can look through too.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
I have always been a singer and I started out in bars and clubs. I also did a lot of cabaret in England, Europe and the USA. I was a TV and live backing singer for a while too. Singing live led to me providing the music and entertainment at weddings and parties alike and I love it- singing songs to make people dance, singing a requested first dance, meeting new people and making them happy- all perks of the job!
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
I had a booking for a couple's wedding - it was for the ceremony, drinks reception and the wedding; it was wonderful to do all 3! I provided background music throughout the day too, while I wasn't singing. By the end of the day, I really felt like I'd shared something special with this couple and their families. They were both marrying for the second time so they had grown children who were so happy for them. The bride cried as she walked down the aisle which nearly set me off, but, true professional that I am, I had to keep a straight face and keep singing, which is why I was there, of course! I think that's part of the appeal of a wedding singer, they can adapt to any part of the day and provide the perfect music accompaniment, whether it's heartfelt ballads for the ceremony, jazz for the drinks reception or dance floor fillers in the evening.
