What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

Firstly the date of the event is required so that I can check availability, as this can also have an effect on the cost as midweek or functions on a Sunday are cheaper than Friday or Saturday evening. The next thing I need to know is the venue and location, the details of the venue are required so I know which size disco is required and if I need to add any extra costs for travel. Finally, I would need to know the start and end time, it is only then I can complete a tailored quote specific to the customer's requirements.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The most important bit of advice is do not just look at the cost and who is the cheapest, not all mobile DJs offer the same service or use the same equipment and music. One of the questions I get asked a lot is "Do you have lights?", this is because a lot of people think that if they have a laptop and download some music they are a DJ. There is more to being a DJ than a very basic setup, the music they download is usually of bad quality and downloaded illegally, the equipment is not normally of a good standard, sometimes neither is the service the offer (that is why they are so cheap). A professional mobile DJ should have quality equipment as well as a good selection of lights to suit various occasions, they should also pay for the music they play. Not all DJs are reliable and offer a professional service, which is why another of the questions I get asked is "Are you available at the weekend or next weekend as my DJ has let me down?". Quality and reliability, along with a competitive price, is much more important when looking to book a mobile DJ.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

When I was younger I got a great opportunity to work with a talented local DJ as a roadie, helping him carry and setup the equipment. After a while he let me play a selection of music at some of the functions and this is where I started to really enjoy the evenings a lot more. After a while I decided to buy some of my own equipment and records, starting my first mobile disco as Tony B This progressed for a few years with my equipment and record collection starting to grow steadily, along with my passion for DJ-ing. After quite a few years, I also took up some residencies in local pubs and clubs, dabbling a little in music creation and production but then took a little break to concentrate on my day to day work life as an IT professional. After a little time out from DJ-ing, I noticed that at some of the parties and celebrations I was attending as a guest that the quality and variety of mobile DJs were not always up to scratch, and that's when I decided to start back up as a mobile DJ and Disco Nation was born. I wanted to offer a better service than the 'usual' mobile DJs and make sure that the customer had a more professional, reliable choice when it came to booking a mobile DJ or disco.
