Read on for their story plus a really useful list of checks to make when choosing a DJ for your event.
What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
Many customers just ask "can you give me a price?"
Whilst this may seem like a straight forward question it really depends on exactly what you'd like.
First and foremost, the most important aspect is your chosen date. Without knowing this I could be providing information when there is no possibility I can DJ for you as I'm already booked.
If you have chosen a venue great but even if you haven't chosen one, an idea of the location you're planning to have your party is really helpful as I'm sure you can appreciate, a 150-mile round trip incurs extra travel expenses and time to get there and back.
Knowing what kind of event you're planning is a great help, you've spent quite a while planning for your party, I like to as well. Although a lot of DJing is looking at what's working and changing music genres if needed on the night, my work comes down to 90% planning and 10% execution. Making sure I have all special songs for first and additional dances is important to me as much as it is you.
An approximate number of guests can also help as it gives an idea of the kind of equipment required, more equipment means a longer set up time.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Ask what they can do to make your party great! Price, although important, doesn't give an indication of how your event will be. I know of "cheap" DJs that are just as good as expensive DJs. You're not buying a
product, you're buying an experience.
Not many people remember just how good your vol au vents were two years later but they can remember the feeling of being on the dance floor with all their friends and family, being hoisted up onto shoulders during anthems, being with childhood friends reliving their youth.
Aside from that, ask if they're insured, ask if their equipment has been electrically tested as some venues won't allow companies to work there if they can't provide the correct documentation.
Ask where they source their music, do they pay for a subscription service or do they illegally download music from YouTube? the sound quality is astounding.
Ask for a copy of their terms and conditions and expect a booking form and contract.
Add all of these together and there is a very very good chance you'll have the best party ever!
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
I've been a DJ since 2002. I started mixing records in my friend's bedroom and to start with I hated it. I could not beat match to save my life. I persevered with it and found I was good at it and naturally dreamt of playing to crowds of thousands in nightclubs here and abroad. I got gigs in bars and local clubs but headlining a gig never materialised, unfortunately.
Fast forward to 2014, I married my Fiancee in Las Vegas and had a party when we returned. The DJ was atrocious!
We went to Ibiza a year later and took note of all the DJs there living the dream, although my personal circumstances and young family meant I couldn't move to Spain for a season to work as a DJ, this reignited my intent to do what I love doing.
Having worked in bars I wanted to do something different and remembering my own experience with my wedding DJ I made the decision to operate as a mobile DJ. At least I can be certain that people who choose me to DJ for them will get someone that is passionate about creating memories and provides a high level of customer service, two things we never had when we celebrated our wedding with our friends and family.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
One of the most recent bookings I've had through Add to is the one that has given me the most satisfaction even though the wedding isn't until February 2021.
Reading the reply email where the customer said my quote was the "only one that hasn't terrified us" made me realise I am doing something right.
Knowing I'd put a couple at ease and hopefully removing some of the stress that comes with planning a wedding was a great feeling.
Of course, the party hasn't happened yet but making sure we keep in touch over the next year and planning for every eventuality will make the night one to remember.
