Graeme Shaw is a Newcastle magician and is one of the busiest magicians in the UK. He has performed at most venues across Newcastle and the North East but also travels all over the world to perform. Hear about his passion for his art and also his advice for booking a magician for your event.

What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

To give a quote to a potential customer I need to know the date of the event, the type of event, the venue (or proposed venue) a rough idea of start time and roughly how many guests. I do generally perform for 1 - 2 hours depending on guest numbers.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Decide what sort of magician you would like. There are many different types. Close up magicians, children's magicians, stage magicians and even mind readers!
Try and find someone who is a professional and not someone just doing it as a hobby. You will tend to find the professionals have a lot more experience but maybe a little more expensive. Find someone who is a member of the Magic Circle, this means they take their craft seriously. Don't book the cheapest! You generally find in most cases the more they are the better they are.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

I started performing magic when I was just NINE years old. I remember the impact a magician made on me when I first sat and watched one perform live. As I got older I joined the junior magic circle and went on to win various awards in magic competitions. This was when I realized I was actually getting pretty good. From the age of 18, I was pretty much professional. My aim is to bring the art of magic to as many people as possible. I love what I do and hopefully, this shows when I perform.

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

I've been booked a few times through Add to Event. A wedding I performed at last year at Langley castle in Northumberland stands out in my mind. A stunning wedding venue that I actually got married in myself. The groom had looked into lots of magicians but actually came to see me before booking. After seeing me perform and give him his watch back he booked me on the spot.
