Ale on a Bale
Ale on a Bale provide a mobile bar for outdoor events from Northwich, throughout Cheshire and beyond. Serving hand-pulled regional ales alongside draught lager and cider from a fully restored vintage horse-trailer-turned-bar, Ale on a Bale aim to make each drink a unique experience. Champagne and Pimms are also available, as well as soft drinks for younger or more stoic customers. As well as their lovingly restored horse trailer, Ale on a Bale can also provide a static bar complete with its own power supply.
What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
We need all the information you'd expect. Firstly the date to check our availability. Secondly the venue, if possible, so that we can start to think about the alcohol licence. An estimated number of guests is also very helpful at the outset and then we can discuss the remaining details with the client.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
There are two key things. First is how much they know about their product - from this you'll be able to tell if they're really passionate about what they do. Secondly, you need to be sure that they're on top of the licensing laws and their responsibilities.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
We were inspired by a village fair’s poor quality beer tent that was something of a tepid, tinned disappointment. We thought 'Surely it’s possible to serve decent beer at outdoor events for a reasonable price?'. A friend’s horse trailer provided further inspiration and that’s how we started. We gained some experience helping to run our CAMRA accredited local cricket club bar. Learning how to manage a cellar and look after real ale helped us to develop the concept.
