The Runaways continue to produce the highest quality sound and still rehearse routinely to perfect regular numbers and learn new ones to extend their repertoire. They also pay attention to the visual aspects of their performances and are always immaculate in their smart suits and memorable for their striking bright red guitars and those famous ‘walks’!
What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
We would need the venue name, a full address, an ETA for the band to set up, where to park.
We need the contact at the venue and telephone number, how the set up is arranged are there
stairs, a lift? Do we use our own PA, drum kit, lighting etc? Does the facility have a room to
be able to change into our stage suits? How long do you require the bands set to include break?
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Always look to give as much information as you can, 'the more the merrier'! Even if some of it is
not needed it's best to 'be prepared' yet another motto!! You have to remember it's electrical equipment
so will need to be under cover and away from the public at a safe distance. Think of any obstacles that could be in the way, tight corners or alleyways to manoeuvre to get to the stage, is it a stage, cordoned area
curtained off alcove, all needs to be taken into consideration due to the size of the band and gear they bring.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
I started off playing trombone originally! After 6 months of a 'dying elephant' as my neighbours often chanted, I opted for learning the drums. Our band still has 3 original members since 1982 we knew each other from school and loved rock n roll, The Shadows, old TV and Film themes and many other genres that had punch! So it began, Tim, Gary, then Kevin and me became The Runaways. After 30 years Kevin left and in 2017 Cliff yes Cliff! Became our new bassist-singer to complement, myself and Tim's vocals. So as we stand it's 41 years in the music industry! Myself on drums and vocs, Tim rhythm guitar and vocs, Cliff bass & vocs Gary (GB) on lead.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
We played at the Family Day for the Army Engineers at the barracks in Andover Hants. We were escorted through the stringent checks by the guard house and set up under a gazebo with the royal engineers logo royally emblazoned across the top. It was a family day so they had friends & family and their children there, so was plenty for them to see and do. We had a room to change into our 'stage' suits and came out to rapturous applause. Some folk even danced in the road but at least no vehicles were allowed in that part! We were treated to burgers and hot dogs from the stand and cans of coke, bottled water a plenty, to keep hydrated. It was a very warm day with little breeze. We finished early in the day due to the kiddies there it wasn't going to be a late night anyway, We set down, loaded the cars shook many hands and thanks received and made our way back to Kent and Surrey respectively.
