What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
In order to provide a comprehensive quote the most important information for me is the date and the duration of your event, together with the location from which a firm price can be provided. Other useful information, but not essential for the quote, is details of the event what type of event e.g. Birthday, Wedding, Anniversary etc. Also the venue itself in terms of access and parking really helps me to decide if I need trollies etc. to transport equipment from my vehicle.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Music for parties usually comes down to personal taste so a DJ will want to know about your particular music preferences and what they are in terms of genre so ask the DJ what they mostly play also ask if they can cater for a mixed party group of different ages and tastes in music? Requests are very common but not all DJs have access to every track on the planet as they sometimes have limited downloads available so can they accommodate any request? There are basically two types of DJ; a) Club DJs and b) Party DJ if you want a varied collection of tracks played across the decades or for them to work from your playlist then ask for a party DJ as a Club DJ will usually charge you more and they usually have a pre-defined set of tracks they will mix against various backbeats.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
My Mobile DJ service started purely by accident whereby I was running a number of events in schools for my company at the proving effective communication skills seminars launched as part of the Millennium Exhibition in Greenwich known at the time as The Dome now called the O2 arena. As part of the roll-out of these communication workshops, I had access to a sound system (speakers, amplifier, mixer and radio mics etc.) during this time my son wanted a birthday party so I thought I'd save some money and try and DJ myself through my laptop. I found it was something I was pretty good at and it just took off from there providing music at friends and family parties as well as my annual summer BBQ. It got to the point where I decided to buy my own sound system and a few lights because I was in high demand. The local pub asked me to play at a charity event it was at that point I thought I'd start to charge and see what happens and fifteen years later I've never looked back. Now that I have retired early from my main job I have more time on my hands to DJ but it still feels like a hobby rather than a job.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
I'm quite new to Add to Event a couple of months in but I was astonished by the number of bookings I've had since joining in fact I have my first party booked through Add to Event coming up in a couple of weeks and looking forward to it. At this point in time I've had 8 successful bookings and I have probably quoted for maybe double that but a 50% success rate is fantastic in this business. I've used other agencies for DJ work with only limited success only a handful in probably 6 months and the commission was high. I love the use of credits to quote rather than commission percentage off my fee seems to work much better. I will let you know how my first gig goes soonest.
